Hiring On as Caravan Guards
The party spoke with Durren, a dwarf wagon master, about joining his caravan to Feymott as guards. Durren agreed to hire all six party members at 10 silver per person, with payment upon arrival. The caravan would depart in three days at first light.
Supplies and Errands
Frankie Drake purchased parchment, ink, travelers’ clothes, rations, chalk, oil flasks, and other supplies so he could copy the fragment of the Shadow Road Codex before delivering it to the library. Halvor Woodsinger purchased a book titled On the Correspondence of Tones with the Unseen World, which soon proved relevant.
The Mysterious Music
At the inn, a kobold quartet performed drinking songs and sea shanties. During their second evening, they played a slower and stranger piece with odd intervals. Halvor recognized possible connections between the music and his new book’s description of a “depth cipher” and the seven sunken modes.
When questioned, the kobold reed-pipe player explained that the melody came to them in a dream. Another band member also found it familiar, and the group had been experimenting with it because it felt unlike their usual music. Halvor became concerned that the song might be hypnotic or dangerous.
Kobold-Dwarf Tensions
Frankie spoke with the kobold musicians, who expressed frustration with how dwarves in town treated them. When Durren and other dwarves entered the inn, the kobolds deliberately played off-key in protest.
Smuggling Opportunity
Splinter visited a local tavern and made contact with a dwarf who might arrange for the party to carry smuggled goods to Feymott. The dwarf explained that there is demand for arcane materials, books, and spell components in Friula, but the road between Ferriero and Feymott is monitored by druids who intercept magical goods and sometimes kidnap wizards.
